New Rules on Twitter Marketing for Cannabis
This is part of the Cannabis Business Marketing series, where we introduce some conventional advertising
methods that you can explore for your marijuana business. Today, we introduce
you to how having an active and interesting Twitter account can attract more
local customers.
So what can you do with Twitter
marketing? Twitter is called a 'real time’ social media. In real time, you can
tell your followers about your weekly specials and events. In 140 characters or
less, you can write anything, industry news, how-to tips, opinions or something
that will interest your customers. If done right, Twitter can be a great social
platform for marketing your cannabis business.
Getting Started
With a little effort and a lot of
intuitive "feeling your way through", you'll soon be a Twitter expert
in no time! We’ll dive into Twitter marketing as part of our new Cannabis Business Marketing series.
But first, let’s start by keeping in mind these
general do’s and don’ts when crafting your marketing strategy:
- No deceptive, false or misleading statements.
- No communicating of the price or distribution.
- No advertising where it appeals to or seen by those below the legal age.
- No testimonials or endorsements.
- No depiction of a person, character or animal, whether real or fictional.
- No presenting of brand element that evokes a positive or negative emotion about or image or a way of life that shows glamour, recreation, excitement, vitality, risk or daring.
- No giveaway coupons as promotional materials, or conduct promotional activities such as games or competitions to encourage sale of marijuana or marijuana products.
- No (or limited) sponsoring of events or facilities.
- Limitations on broadcast, cable, radio, and print communications. In California, you must prove to the local compliance officer that no more than 30 percent of the audience is expected to be under the age of 21.
- Don’t infringe on any existing brands’ copyrights, regardless of the industry.
Just because cannabis businesses are
limited in their ability to advertise through the standard, mainstream channels
doesn’t mean you should give up!
